Wonder Woman early cover design sketches and ideas.
Wonder Woman: Amazon. Hero. Icon. is the new art book written by Bob Greenberger and art directed and designed by myself. Matthew K. Manning also wrote the first chapter. Working with our editors Jessica Fuller at Rizzoli International Publications and Chris Cerasi at DC Comics, Bob covered Wonder Woman novelly by organizing chapters around different aspects of her story as opposed to writing a linear history. The book’s editorial direction was focused solely on the comic book incarnations of Wonder Woman throughout her history. I read through thousands of pages of artwork in the DC archives and in the stacks of comics several feet high in my studio that were provided as source material. My object was to find work that represented a wide breadth of artists that worked on the character over the years per editorial direction, all while referencing Bob’s text and choosing moments and panels with great graphic impact, artistry and/or significance. I naturally also made many selections based on the work’s fascinating weirdness. Bob suggested art additions and subtractions along the production and led a final search through the DC Archives to locate missing pieces that could only be found there, which rounded out the art selections. The book was published in April 2010.
