Released in April 2008, Unfiltered: The Complete Ralph Bakshi is the long overdue first look at the life, career and art of a true American original, director Ralph Bakshi. I art directed and designed the complete book and co-wrote it with Jon M. Gibson. The foreword is written by Quentin Tarantino.

The Soho Journal reviewed Unfiltered with the opening lines: “Some publishers print books on or about art, while others publish books that are art. This is such a book. Unfiltered: The Complete Ralph Bakshi is perfect.”

Shane Glines of Cartoon Retro calls Unfiltered “possibly the best animation art book since ‘Illusion of Life‘” on his blog.

John Kricfalusi creator of Ren and Stimpy writes “I think this might be my favorite animation book yet” in his review on his blog. “Wow! An art of animation book that totally gives you what you want!”

Amid Amidi of Cartoon Brew and Animation Blast calls Unfiltered a “must-have” animation book and a “visual feast packed with page after page of amazing artwork” on his early preview post.

Unfiltered: The Complete Ralph Bakshi has also received positive press from Entertainment Weekly, Juxtapoz, Arthur, Vanity Fair, Playboy, The New York Times, New York Magazine, BlackBook and more.

Charles Solomon writing for the Los Angeles Times however felt that, “Bakshi’s career, which has had more ups, downs and hairpin turns than a roller coaster, is overdue for a serious examination. ‘Unfiltered’ is not that book. Compiled by two avowed fans with heavy input from Bakshi and his family, it’s a sloppily written paean that reads like the product of a vanity press.” Furthermore, Solomon writes, “A thoughtful, balanced study might attract new audiences to Bakshi’s films, but a superficial apologia like ‘Unfiltered’ cannot benefit the reputation of the man or his work.”
